How to Pursue Education as an Indian Student in Canada?

Canada is a top choice for international students, according to a recent report by the Canadian Bureau of International Education. This is particularly true for Indian students, who typically choose Canada as their study abroad destination. In fact, at approximately 217,000 as of December 31, 2021, Indian students made up about 30% of all international students in Canada.

There are numerous excellent colleges, universities, and other post-secondary institutions in Canada that accommodate international students. There are a few steps you should take in order to discover the right program and be eligible to attend.

Research your Academic Programs and Institutes

Find programs that fit your career goals, research the area of the institution, and learn about what life will be like there. Additionally, you should verify that the course you choose is offered at a designated learning institution (DLI). Once you’ve chosen the institution or school you want to attend, submit your application.

 Letter of Acceptance

You will receive a Letter of Acceptance if your application to a DLI is accepted. This LOA is required in order to apply for a study permit. Make sure that the entire letter includes information like:

  • The DLI’s name and contact information
  • your name, birth date, and postal address
  • The course of study, its level, its length, when it will begin, and when it is expected to end

 Request a Study Permit

Once you receive your LOA, you can apply directly to IRCC for a study permit. You will require some other documents in addition to your LOA, such as:

  • A statement proving your capacity to pay for your studies and living expenses in Canada.
  • Police certifications
  • Medical examinations, if necessary
  • Letter of explanation outlining your professional goals and ties to your home country

Student Direct Stream

Indian students can use the Student Direct Stream to apply for their study permits. This stream will simplify the application process for study permits for Indian students. The service standard for SDS is 20 days. The SDS has additional conditions for eligibility. Students applying through SDS must also hold a $10,000 CAD Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) with a Canadian bank. Additionally, the IELTS language criterion for each skill is a minimum of 6.0.
